Blinn-Bryan Speech Professor recognized at honor society's international conference

Professor Melissa Meek received Phi Theta Kappa's 2023 Paragon Award for new advisors

Melissa MeekSpeech Professor and co-advisor of the Blinn College-Bryan Campus Alpha Phi Lambda Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society Melissa Meek recently was recognized with a 2023 Paragon Award for new advisors. Meek received her award at PTK’s international conference, PTK Catalyst, in Columbus, Ohio.

The Paragon Award is presented to advisors with less than four years of service who have made a significant contribution to the growth of their PTK members, serve as the chapter’s advocate on campus, and encourage the chapter’s involvement on the local, regional, and international levels of the organization.

“It is a privilege to serve as an advisor for the high-achieving students who dedicate themselves to Blinn-Bryan’s PTK chapter,” Meek said. “I am proud of their accomplishments and so honored to receive this award.”

Meek joined Blinn’s Communication Studies Department in 2015. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication and Master of Arts in Interpersonal and Organizational Communication from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Natural Health from Clayton College. Meek is a graduate of the College’s FutureWorks Academy faculty and staff leadership development program and serves as a Navigator, a volunteer faculty member who assists students in achieving their academic goals.

Dillon Phipps, English Professor and co-advisor of the Blinn College-Brenham Campus Beta Alpha Chapter of PTK, was recognized with a Horizon Award for new advisors at PTK’s Texas Regional Conference held in March.

PTK is the premier honor society recognizing students’ academic achievements at associate degree-granting colleges. Students must have at least a 3.5 grade-point average with a minimum of 12 transferrable hours to be inducted. The society is comprised of more than 3.8 million members, with almost 1,300 chapters in 11 countries.
