Blinn College District student Colbey Thornton has received a Texas Honors Institute (THI) Scholarship.

Colbey ThorntonThornton, who served as president of the Blinn College-Brenham Campus Student Government Association, received a $250 Star Scholarship at the THI held recently in Tyler. Thornton also served as Texas Junior College Student Government Association Region IV Executive Board president.

Blinn’s Beta Alpha and Alpha Phi Lambda chapters of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) community college honor society represented the College as seminar leaders at THI. Dillon Phipps, co-advisor of Phi Theta Kappa’s Beta Alpha Chapter at Blinn-Brenham, and Rachel Valentine, co-advisor of PTK’s Alpha Phi Lambda Chapter at Blinn-Bryan, led a session asking students to think about the ways they contribute to the success of their Phi Theta Kappa chapter.

In addition, the Alpha Phi Lambda chapter, led by students Diamantina Jenkins and Keiara Castle, presented a workshop on effective communication skills and chapter management at the conference.

THI is a PTK Texas region summer program that specifically covers Honors in Action, one of the organization’s two major projects each calendar year. Honors in Action combines academic research, problem-solving, and action-oriented service to address real-world challenges. Students turn research into a plan of action by creating a project or event that meets specific needs in their area.

The Blinn-Brenham SGA develops student leadership, serves as a liaison between students and college administration, represents the voice of the Blinn student body, and makes improvements in all areas of campus life.
