The Blinn College District will host an information session for students interested in pursuing a career that impacts lives through social work.
The information session will be held Thursday, Nov. 9, at 4:15 p.m. on the Blinn-Bryan Campus in Room A-108 and on Zoom.
Dr. Ebony Lang, Program Director for Tarleton State University’s Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), and Nick Haynes, a Tarleton State University social work instructor, will be on campus to answer questions about the social work profession and discuss how the courses Blinn offers create a pathway to Tarleton’s program at Texas A&M-RELLIS.
Blinn currently offers two highly transferable courses in social work, SOCW 2361: Introduction to Social Work and SOCW 2362: Social Welfare.
“The courses offered at Blinn expose students who are interested in helping people to the discipline of social work itself,” Lang said. “Taking these classes at Blinn really allows students to step right into a bachelor’s degree program in social work because in order to start our core classes, students need these prerequisites.”
Social workers are employed in a variety of settings, including mental health clinics, schools, child welfare and human service agencies, hospitals, and private practice. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2022 the median pay for social workers was $55,350 per year and employment is expected to grow 7% nationwide between 2022 and 2032, resulting in 53,800 new positions.
“Blinn’s classes are a great introduction to the multifaceted world of social work,” said Robert Stanberry, Department Head for Blinn’s Paralegal, criminal justice, sociology, and social work programs. “In addition to touching on the overall field and policies behind the profession, these courses are taught by social work practitioners who bring a wealth of field experience into the classroom.”
The next sections of Blinn’s social work courses are available in spring 2024. Registration is currently open for Blinn’s winter minimester and spring 2024 courses. For more information on Blinn’s social work courses, contact Robert Stanberry at robert.stanberry@blinn.edu.
