Clare White will graduate from the Blinn College District this December with an Associate of Science in Health Sciences–Nursing, a degree that she says has given her the academic foundation, confidence, and hands-on preparation she needs to succeed in Blinn’s Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program.

In January, the Johnson City native will begin the ADN Program at the RELLIS Campus in Bryan, where she will take the next step toward becoming a registered nurse.

White said the Health Sciences–Nursing curriculum — which includes courses in anatomy and physiology, microbiology, psychology, nutrition, chemistry, statistics, ethics, history, and government — challenged her while preparing her for the rigor of nursing school.

“I really like my professors,” White said. “The classes have been challenging, but they have taught me well. I feel ready to start the nursing program.”

White balanced her academic workload — including 17 credit hours in her final semester — with competition on Blinn’s cross country team. In addition to enjoying her time on the cross country team, she said her classroom experiences shaped her long-term goals.

“All my professors have been helpful and understanding,” she said. “They want you to succeed, and they challenge you in ways that prepare you for what comes next.”

Dr. Wael Ghaly, a professor in Blinn’s Biology Department, said White excelled in one of the program’s most demanding courses.

“Clare showed an exceptional ability to grasp the complex concepts in anatomy and physiology and apply them thoughtfully,” Ghaly said. “Her hard work and curiosity embody the values of perseverance and excellence. I have no doubt she will succeed in her future endeavors.”

Blinn’s Associate of Science in Health Sciences–Nursing is designed to provide students with the prerequisite courses needed to apply to Blinn’s health science programs, including Associate Degree Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Emergency Medical Services, Health Information Technology, Physical Therapist Assistant, Radiologic Technology, and Surgical Technology. The degree also fulfills many requirements in Blinn’s Fire Science and Fire Safety and Health programs and transfers to a wide range of health science bachelor’s programs, including Bachelor of Science in Nursing pathways.

Through the RELLIS Academic Alliance, students may apply their coursework toward the Bachelor of Science in Health Science from West Texas A&M University, offered at Texas A&M-RELLIS in Bryan. Graduates also may enter the workforce directly in healthcare-related positions such as medical research support, health education, medical writing, and specialized customer service.

White, whose sister is studying nursing at Tarleton State University, said she is excited to begin clinical rotations and explore specialty areas within the field.

“I am excited about nursing as a profession,” White said. “Once I am in the nursing program, I will decide what I like best and then specialize in that.”
