Frequently Asked Questions about Counseling

It provides counseling and education to students and consultation to staff/faculty. The goal is to facilitate growth and change in students’ lives.

Counseling appointments are 45 minutes long. The entire process will take approximately one hour.

Currently enrolled students may utilize our services at no cost.

The counseling office provides short-term therapy. Sessions will be limited based on demand.

All aspects of your participation in counseling are confidential by state law. Counseling Services may share your information if you provide written consent. However, your counselor is required to report information to authorities in the following situations:

  1. We reserve the right to seek consultation with professional colleagues, which will aid us in our work with you. We will treat your information as confidential.
  2. If we believe you pose a threat to yourself or someone else, we may contact appropriate authorities to maintain your protection and protection of others.
  3. Cases of suspected abuse or neglect of children or adults not otherwise able to protect themselves.
  4. If records are court ordered to be released or otherwise required by state or federal law.

If you are unable to keep an appointment, you must contact Counseling Services at least 24 hours in advance. If due to a rare emergency or illness, you must contact the department and cancel as far in advance as possible. If you miss an appointment and do not reschedule within one business day, further appointments with a counselor cannot be guaranteed.

When the services required are beyond our scope of practice we may recommend a referral to a more appropriate agency.
